Due to certain working conditions, bringing the notebook to work is not practical or possible. The notebook will not survive the tough and rugged working conditions of workers laboring in forestry, construction, mining, or other harsh outdoor environments. The compact and durable handheld computer by Trimble, Ranger 3, provides an alternative solution for field workers who need the services of a reliable computer in the outdooors.

The computer runs Windows Mobile 6.5Pro and features 3G access, WiFi, and Bluetooth. It is also designed with built-in 5MP camera, GPS, and a 1D laser barcode scanner. Ranger 3 meets the tough requirements of the military in its ability to survive the rugged outdoors in terms of extreme temperatures, vibration, drops, humidity, and altitude. It has a sunlight readable VGA resolution display which enables reading even in strong sunlight. It is also dust-proof as well as waterproof in up to a meter of water for thirty minutes. The highly integrated and durable Ranger 3 has IP67 certification and will be available in February 2011.
