YouTube offers a wide range of video content in the Internet, ranging from the serious to the absurd and the innocent to the illicit. This diversity of material is free and easily available with just a few clicks on the computer keyboard. Parents may, however, worry about their children accessing and viewing pornographic or age inappropriate material through this popular video-sharing platform. For better parental control, YouTube has recently added a feature, Safety Mode, which filters inappropriate content from users’ search results.

Users just need to follow some simple steps to turn on the Safety Mode feature:

Step 1: Scroll to the bottom of any YouTube page.
Step 2: Click on the words “Safety Mode is Off.”
Step 3: Adjust the settings, click Save and start searching.

By turning on the Safety Mode, users will lock a filter onto their YouTube searches where inappropriate content will be blocked. A message “to view this video, you must disable Safety Mode” will appear if users try to access the blocked videos. The material can only be viewed when users key in their YouTube account password. However, to permanently lock on Safety Mode, users have to log on to their YouTube account.
Safety Mode increases the control users have over the video accessed on their computer. While it is not foolproof, it helps to minimize access to illicit videos or material in YouTube and help parents to assert some control over their children’s online activity.
