You may have heard about the Find My iPhone app that was initially available as part of MobileMe service which requires subscription and good news now, Apple has officially announced that the feature will be opened to all iPhone 4, the 4th generation iPod touch and iPad users as a free app without MobileMe subscription.

As the name implies, Find My iPhone app can help to locate your missing iPhone, iPod or iPad and display them on the map. Besides, it has remote access capability that enables control to either play a sound or display a message, with the hope that someone else that picks the device can return to its original owner. That is not all, in case the first method is not effective, there is even a way for the owner to lock the device or delete all personal confidential data permanently.

Currently the Find My iPhone app is free for download in App Store and is compatible to be used on iPhone 4, the 4th generation iPod touch and iPad (Apple ID and iOS 4.2 are required). However, the service is not available for international users and for those that are using older iPhone models may have to wait a little bit longer to use this app without charge.
