It is always a good practice if we can run disk cleanup utility at least once for every 3 or 6 months in order to free up had disk space. When running disk cleanup utility, the scanning process normally will take long time to complete as it will scan through old compressed files as well. Do you aware that actually there is a way to speed up the scanning process by excluding the tool from scanning older compress files?

To speed up the scanning process by excluding older compress files, you can do it by deleting the old compressed files in the registry entry as shown below. You are advised to do the backup prior performing the deleting just in case you want to restore it back the original setting.

1. Go to Start -> Run, then type regedit and press enter

2. Locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches.

3. Click on Compress old files registry entry, then press delete button to delete the entry.

4. Restart your computer in order to take the effect of the change.

Run disk cleanup utility again, you will realize the scanning process will take shorter time to complete, hence saving your time for other more productive tasks.
