The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) has just announced a new Bluetooth specification, Bluetooth 2.1 standard to be adopted for its future devices. It is famous for its simplicity and low power consumption which makes its usage in short range device communication so common especially among the portable devices such as laptop, mobile phones and PDA. The new version is fully back-compatible with version 1.1 and will have some enhancement over its previous versions.

One of the enhancements that have been added into the new Bluetooth 2.1 version is Sniff Subrating which is capable of further reducing the power consumption to prolong the device battery life time. It is said to be able to increase the battery life time by 3 to 10 times as compared to current performance. Secondly, it also featured a Secure Simple Pairing in which users can experience a more simplified pairing process while maintaining the security feature. That is not all, some other enhancements such as Extended Inquiry Response, Encryption Pause Resume and etc are also being incorporated into the new version.

While still waiting for new devices being Bluetooth version 2.1 certified, some already starts discussing about Bluetooth version 3.0, which is the next generation of Bluetooth with even greater enhancements. It is believed that there will be a plan to integrate UWB (Ultra Wide Band) wireless technology into Bluetooth 3.0.
