dell.gifThe world number two computer manufacturer, Dell, is now offering consumers computer that come preloaded with the open source Linux operating. Dell has been offering business Linux-based computers to users for sometime, but this is the first time that such a major computer maker offering the technology on desktops and laptops designed for consumer use. It is a sign of a growing challenge to Microsoft!

According to Dell, the computer will use Ubuntu, a community developed, Linux-based operating system for its laptops and desktops. Ubuntu contains all basic applications such as web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and etc. The move by Dell to offer consumers a full-featured laptop/desktop without using any products from the world’s largest software maker, Microsoft, will set a new precedent in this industry. Currently 90% of the world’s computer is using Microsoft’s operating system.
