Intel has introduced many new silicon with great architecture and technology breakthrough during the recent IDF (Intel Developer Forum) held in San Francisco. Besides Nahelem that has gained much attention, there is another one that worth to be mentioned here – an Intel next generation SoC (System on Chip) CE3100 media processor. Better known as Canmore codename, it is a single chip solution that targeted to bring great visual and audio experience in Consumer Electronics market space.

The CE3100 is a second Pentium M core based SoC processor after the recent release of EP80578 SoC for industrial segment. The core is clocking at 800MHz with integrated 2D/3D graphics engine and further supported by an internal 3-channel 800MHz DDR2 memory controller to handle intensive media decoding. While Google is doing so well with its online advertising strategy, Yahoo is expected to collaborate with Intel to roll out its Widget Channel that can display advertisement contents on huge TV screen directly. Besides, Widget Channel will enable web channels with news or weather update through internet service provider as well as live chatting with peers or email checking. That is where this SoC can play its important role in. With its ultra small form factor and single chip capability, it can be designed well into any set top box or even TV set directly.
The SoC will begin shipment in September this year, with initial engagement already confirmed from both Samsung and Toshiba, the famous manufacturers in consumer electronics market space. While the trend is towards browsing web on TV, we should expect more OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to design in using this SoC in short future.
