While the LCD panel is trending towards bigger size display with higher resolutions, you may be surprised to hear that there are actually some applications that still need tiny display for their compact system design. Just recently, Kopin, the display manufacturer has just unveiled a new tiny LCD (Liquid-crystal display) with VGA resolution suitable for both consumer and military use. Measured at merely 0.27-inch diagonal size, it is claimed to be the world’s smallest VGA resolution LCD that packs a full 600 X 480 pixels into it.

This is one of the major milestones in its product roadmap by able to shrink the color dots further to 2.9 X 8.7 um from 3.75 X 11.25 um previously. Theoretically using the same color dot size, the manufacturer is capable to scale to higher resolutions accordingly with SVGA (800 X 600) at 0.34-inch diagonal size, XGA (1024 X 768) at 0.44-inch diagonal size and ultimately a 2048 X 2048 resolutions display with an aggressive goal of fitting within the size of typical postage stamp.

You may wonder what kind of usage model could utilize this. Some of them include the viewfinder targeted for high-end digital camera or camcorders, as well as night vision system for military applications. No pricing and availability yet, we should expect more new revolution products soon from the manufacturer through its innovative and proprietary technologies leadership.
