Samsung recently showcased its new IPTV set-top box in Cebit, held in Hannover, Germany last month. This set-top box, known as SMT-H6155 supports 802.11n wireless connectivity that can stream High Definition (HD) media to other digital devices in the home. 802.11n, is a revolution from 802.11b/g wifi technology which support high bandwidth of more than 100 Mbps!

IPTV is a new technology that delivers media contents through Internet Protocol. The Samsung set-top box will convert its IP based media contents to video signal that can be displayed on the TV screen. The High Definition decoding functionality is accomplished by STMicroelectronics chipset embedded into the set-top box. Integrated with the 802.11n Metalink chip, the set-top box can do even further by streaming multiple high definition media contents wirelessly around the digital home.

Analyst forecasts that with the cooperation between STMicroelectronics, a leader in STB decoder and Samsung, a global leader in digital media and convergence technologies, these companies will be able to capture more market shares in IPTV STB segment.
