A new version of firmware software is now available for Sony PlayStation 3. The Sony PS3 firmware version 3.42 has been widely anticipated and expected, ever since hackers manage to exploit a vulnerability on the gaming console to allow gamers to play pirated and backup games, and remove ability to install games directly to console’s hard disk drive.

Thus, the PS3 update will block all hacking attempt, including PSJailbreak, a commercial PS3 cracking USB dongle; PSGroove, an open source PS3 jailbreaking program; PSFreedom, another open source PS3 jailbreak Linux kernel for mobile device, and the equivalent ports.

Previously, Sony has tried to stop the release and distribution of PSJailbreak through legal system by obtaining court injunction against selling of PSJailbreak USB dongle. However, probably the best way to hit is still to patch and fix the vulnerability loophole that been used to exploit the system.

According to Sony PlayStation blog, the new version of system software contains minor update to PS3 system, which includes additional security features. It’s most likely that the new upgrade only fix and patch the security vulnerability to block PSJailBreak, PSGroove and PSFreedom or their ports.

For PS3 owners who want to upgrade, PS3 system software update version 3.42 is available System Update.

For PS3 owners who want to continue to jailbreak and crack the PS3, do not and never upgrade to firmware OS 3.42. The downside of not upgrading to latest version of system software for PS3 is that the console cannot sign into PSN (PlayStation Network), effectively rules out multi-player online gaming.
